Attribute #2 Distinguishing between the Higher Self and the Human Self

Jul 30, 2025

In a world of increasing change, complexity, uncertainty, and risk, is there an opportunity for authentic and enlightening leadership?

Yes! I believe a spiritual awakening is emerging in every corner of our world. It is calling organizational leaders to reinvent and re-contextualize the meaning and purpose of leadership and how we lead.

Being a business leader often demands that we divide ourselves; that we treat our businesses and our souls as separate. I invite you to see them as one and the same.

Enlightening Leadership starts with a deep exploration into the heart of the evolution of your true, authentic leadership which requires distinguishing your Higher Self and developing a deep understanding of our Higher Self and our human self.

The concept of the Higher Self often refers to a spiritual or transcendent aspect of one’s consciousness, while the human self is the everyday, individual identity. Exploring and aligning these aspects can lead to a deeper understanding of one’s purpose and authentic self.

Many spiritual traditions suggest that the Higher Self is a wiser, more enlightened aspect of an individual’s consciousness. Interactions may manifest through intuition, inner guidance, and a sense of connection to a deeper wisdom.

The idea is that by tuning into this Higher aspect, we can gain insights, make more aligned choices, and experience personal growth. It’s a subjective and introspective concept, with interpretations varying across different spiritual and philosophical traditions.

To gain access to our Higher Self we go deep into the center of the heart. We connect to what the Spirit of our heart is yearning for to strengthen our knowingness and intuition. We focus on elevating our connection to Source, to Spirit, which empowers our spiritual path, and allows us to recharge and reset our leadership.

Our Higher Self is in direct connection to Source, to the Spirit of All That Is, and it is our divine birthright to know this and live and lead from this knowing.

The human mind and Spirit are paradoxical-the mind cannot fully grasp the already enlightened nature of Spirit. Spirit is always present as a guide and companion, though the human mind resists realizing this. Asking for guidance and surrendering to receive it allows Spirit to lead, instead of the human mind trying to control. Relaxation and listening are key for the human self to let the Higher Self guide. In truth, the Higher Self is always present as a companion and guide. As this is realized, it brings enormous freedom and power.

Asking for guidance each moment, and surrendering to receive it allows Spirit to lead through us. When no guidance comes, we do our best then to let Spirit handle the rest. The human mind habitually tries to figure everything out itself. The human tendency is to “do”, however “being” and “listening” are key. Relaxation and recreation allow our Higher Self to come forward and guide. Not judging ourselves in this process is important.

“Great Spirit” is a term used in various indigenous cultures to refer to a divine, universal, or sacred force that is believed to be present in all of creation. It is often associated with spiritual beliefs and practices that emphasize the interconnectedness of all living things and the reverence for nature. The concept varies among different Native American tribes and other indigenous communities, each having their own unique interpretations and cultural expressions related to the Great Spirit.

Practices such as meditation, self-reflection, and mindfulness are often employed to strengthen the connection between the Higher Self and the human self. The future of organizations and the future for people depend on the creation of a new possibility for leadership.  A transformation of management, organization and work is essential and only possible through a new paradigm for leadership.

Distinguishing between your Higher self vs your human self is a deep exploration into your heart and soul illuminating your true Self. Enlightening Leaders lead from their Higher Self tendering the aspects of their human self.

Our definition of Enlightening is: the action or state of being, attaining or having attained spiritual knowledge, insight and wisdom.

The ability to distinguish one's Higher Self and lead from there, is an Enlightening Leader in action.
